New Brunswick, NJ (June 13, 2008)—State Theatre presents the world premiere of Ballroom! An Original Production featuring Reigning World and U.S. Champions on Friday, July 18 at 8pm and Saturday, July 19 at 3pm and 8pm. The State Theatre’s production of Ballroom! is made possible by a generous grant from the McCrane Foundation. Tickets range from $25-50 (student, senior, and group discounts apply).
“One of the things I’m excited about is that this production is like having a good friend in ‘our world’ show you a sneak peek behind the scenes. Then, of course, you get to still see the amazing dancing,” adds Ballroom! co- creator Eddie Simon.
The dancers featured in
Ballroom! have won numerous championships as well as appeared in many
prominent television shows and films. The dance couple of
Jose Decamps
and Joanna Zacharewicz
are the reigning U.S Rhythm Champions, which aired on PBS’ America’s Ballroom
Challenge; and the reigning World Mambo Champions. Their success in national
and international competitions also earned them a recent guest appearance on
ABC’s Dancing with the Stars in April of this year. Dancers
Tomas Mielnicki and JT Thomas are the reigning World and U.S.
American Ballroom Champions and North American Smooth Champions. Mielnicki and
Thomas have also been featured performers in Dancing with the Stars
(2007), Disney’s Enchanted (2007), and PBS’ America’s Ballroom
Challenge (2006, 2007). The dance duo of Kelvin Roche and Lori Ann
Greenhouse, are recognized not only for their title of the reigning World
Hustle Champions, but also for their roles as feature dancers in the films El
Cantante with Marc Anthony and Jennifer Lopez (2007) and Disney’s
Enchanted (2007).
Other featured dancers include 17 year old Tal Livshits and 18 year old Kate Kapshandy, USA Dance Nationals Latin Amateur finalists and two-time Youth Latin and Ten Dance National Champions; USA Dance Nationals Latin Amateur Adult finalists Inna Brayer and Pasha Pashkov; the 2008 “Professional Standard Rising Stars Champions” of the Florida Superstars Dance Sport Championships, husband and wife team, Russ Wilder and Katusha Wilder; the 2008 USA Dance National Dancesport Junior 1 Champion, 12 year-old Austin Joson (resident of Old Bridge, NJ) and 13 year old, Elizabeth Lakovitisky; and Avi Lazarovits and Charlotte Carey, the 2007 Manhattan Amateur Classic (“MAC”) Senior II Standard Champions.
In addition to featuring some of the finest professional ballroom dancers in the
business, the show also incorporates an amateur competition onstage during the
show. The State Theatre is currently seeking 36 amateur couples interested in
performing in the Latin competition and the Smooth competition. Those interested
in competing can mail their submissions to: Ballroom Competition, State Theatre,
